Types of Gears(According to position of axes of the shaft)
1. Spur Gear
2. Helical Gear
3. Rack and pinion Gear
4. Bevel Gear
5. Worm Gear
SPUR GEAR
types-of-gears |
1. Teeth is parallel to axis of rotation.
2. Transmit power from one shaft to another parallel shaft.
3. Used in screwdriver, oscillating sprinkler, windup alarm clock, washing machine and cloth dryer.
HELICAL GEAR
types-of-gear |
1. The teeth on helical gears are cut it an angle to the face of the gear.
2. This gradual engagement makes helical gears operates much more smoothly and quietly than spur gears.
3. If the angles of the gear teeth are correct, they can be mounted on perpendicular shafts, adjusting the rotation angle by 9 degrees.
RACK AND PINION GEAR
types-of-gear |
1. used to convert rotation(from the pinion) in to linear motion(of the rack)
2. Example is the steering system on many cars.
BEVEL GEARS
types-of-gear |
1. They are usually mounted on shaft that are 90 degree apart, but can be designed to work at other angles as well.
2. The teeth on bevel gears can be straight, spiral.
3. Locomotives,marine applications,automobiles,printing presses,cooling towers,steel plants,railway track inspection machines etc.
WORM GEARS
types-of-gear |
1. Used when large gear reductions are needed. It is common for worm gears to have reductions of 20:1 and even up to 300:1
2. The worm can easily turn the gear but gear cannot turn the worm.
3. Used in material handling,transportation machinery,machine tools,automobiles etc
